Post How do you make SOS?
I'm assuming it's a one-pot meal. lol

Do you just make a white sauce and then you add the chipped beef? I've never made it but I've eaten it plenty of times and like it. Anyone have a recipe?

Mom would soak the beef then make white sauce LOTS of pepper and then add the drained and shredded beef to the sauce.

Barb, I use the chipped beef too, or just hamburger.
We had it both ways growing up and Mom always called it SOS.
There is an oniony white sauce I've had for a while now and used the chipped beef in it, it was good.
I leave out the salt if I am using the chipped beef.

1/2 c chopped onion
1 T flour
1 T butter
1 c milk
salt and pepper to taste

Cook onion in butter, then add flour and milk stirring til thickened.

My daddy was a cook in the Navy during WWII and he used to make it with ground beef. He would brown the beef and onions, season it with salt and pepper and then make a roux. He then added evaporated milk (canned milk) and beef broth.

Thanks ladies. I think I'll make the oniony sauce and use the chipped beef I have. That's what I remember having at this diner I used to go to. The evaporated milk sounds interesting I've got some so maybe I'll use that. A combo of both recipes. lol
